Simulated driving for New ArrivalsNew arrivals have very little understanding of how our road system works. A number of recently arrived International University students experienced the SAFETY Sense
simulator. Before the experience, Police suggested they should be made aware of our road signage, merging onto our freeways and in particular, driving on the left hand side of the road. All students made positive comment on the experience and believed it had assisted them to better understand driving on our road system. New arrivals from different cultures have difficulty in achieving the 120 hours necessary to get their licence. Volunteer groups assist by providing vehicles and people who “teach” new arrivals how to drive. As a precursor to this, a segment of their driving lessons will be to “drive” the simulator and experience firsthand what it is like to take charge of a vehicle without presenting a risk to themselves, the volunteer or other road users. |
